Happy and Healthy Snacking During Spring Break
Spring Break is almost upon us. Consider this week of unstructured schedules as a sort of rehearsal for the upcoming months of the same during the summer. How will you and your family fill the time? And, more to my point, how will you handle snacking during spring break?
Please don’t imagine there won’t be any snacking during spring break. There will be. The question is, what kind? Snacking is NOT a bad thing. However, it isn’t necessarily a good thing either. Really, snacking is a dangerous thing. This is because it’s so easy to do it mindlessly and carelessly. We can stock up on snacks quickly in just one or two aisles of the grocery. Many items will be on sale. Many favorite products are even packaged in snack sizes. In no time, we can have our carts and eventually our tummies filled with foods that will not nourish us. Yikes! Tummies filled with sugar, and salt, and empty calories, and not-very-healthy foods. Tasty, maybe. Happy and healthy, no.
Happy and healthy snacks can be tasty, too, and they can be convenient. They can be way less expensive, and often, more fun. When you’re looking ahead to activities during Spring Break, plan snacks for those times, too. Stay-at-home snacks can be made from foods that need refrigeration and can be served creatively. On-the-go snacks can be made from foods that are easy to pack and carry and need no refrigeration. These tasty treats should be designed to provide extra energy.
