The Amazing Avocado

The amazing avocados are available year round here in the U.S., thanks to sunny California. 95% of our avocados are grown there. Even so, there are certain times of the year when they are featured in produce departments. They are piled high and placed front and center. Often their price is lower than usual. Think about it. When have you noticed this avocado phenomenon?

GuacamoleTry New Year’ Day and Super Bowl Sunday.  These are big days for guacamole, made, of course, from avocados. So my first piece of avocado advice: Make your own guacamole from fresh avocados. Don’t purchase the pre-made stuff. The two do not compare.  My second piece of avocado advice: Go beyond guacamole and think beyond the Super Bowl. The avocado is another “Super Food.” In fact, it really is amazing. The list of health benefits is long. Avocados help lower cholesterol, blood sugar levels and blood pressure; they promote eye health, brain function, and heart health. Avocados build up the immune system, aid digestion, and are anti-inflammatory. What’s not to love?

If you’ve heard they are “full of fat,” you are correct. But don’t let that scare you away. Avocado fat is “healthy fat,” that aids in the absorption of nutrients and is not stored in the body. In fact, avocados can aid in weight loss.

Avocado with Tomaotes, Cheese and Balsamic Dressing

Consider eating them weekly, whether stuffed, sliced into salads, wrapped, in puddings, paired with fruit and cheese. . . you get the idea.
