Veganism, which is a plant-based diet is different than a vegetarian diet. Vegetarians don’t eat meat, fish or poultry. Vegans are not so well known, but more is being published about their diet and their philosophy these days. Vegans are also vegetarians, but in addition they do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics and soaps derived from animal products. Vegans are very serious about promoting a more humane and caring world that respects all living beings. Of course, I want to focus on the vegan diet. I am not writing to suggest we all become vegans. I am writing about what to do when a vegan comes to dinner.

It is important to have variety in all our diets, but it’s crucial to the vegan diet. A healthy vegan diet should include fruits, vegetables, lots of leafy greens, whole grain products, seeds and legumes. It’s likely you’ll be serving many of these things to all your guests. Check out some vegan websites or vegan cookbooks at the library to get ideas for how to prepare foods without eggs and dairy products. One website I visit regularly is The recipes are easy to prepare and most recipes will be enjoyed by everyone at your dinner table.

It is not up to you to produce a completely vegan meal for all your guests, but as the hostess you will want to include several items that are okay for a vegan to eat. If you have a vegan family member who eats at your table every day, you can provide food for everyone without turning everyone into a vegan. It’s quite possible, though, that your non-vegans will like the taste of some vegan dishes and will want you to make enough for everyone.  I’ve included two recipes that I am sure will become a family favorite.
